Can URLS containing local hard drive addresses (e.g., c:\folder\) be directed to specific page numbers or sections of a bookmarked pdf file with Adobe Acrobat 9.x? Earlier versions of Adobe Acrobat could not, but would like to know if that is now possible in Adobe Acrobat 9.x. If the former is still the case, are there alternative solutions. Thanks.

My Product Information:
Acrobat Standard 9.2, Windows

What do you mean, exactly? How were those links created?

The link to the pdf document is within an education product being developed using xml and Macromedia’s Flash.

The communication from the following forum (http://www.acrobatusers.com/forums/aucbb/viewtopic.php?id=15216) suggests that this wasn't possible in earlier versions of Adobe Acrobat (click on tech note), but that it may be possible in Adobe Acrobat 9.x. I am simply looking for verification or alternative solutions to the problem. Thanks.

Hi,

If you do not already have it, obtain the open parameters documentation.

Version 9.0, Parameters for Opening PDF Files

Keep in mind that the open parameters are functioning within the browser envirionment.
So, the browser (version and configuration) used by the end-user may well be a variable to consider.

I suspect you will have to do some testing to see what might be possible for your work environment.
Coming out of XML/Flash would seem to call for this testing as the open parameters
documentation is in context of HTML and, to some extend, use of the local machine's command line.

n.b., Open Parameters have been around since Acrobat 4.0.5.
I've noted no significant content difference between the documents released for
Acrobat 6.0, 7.0, 7.0.5, 8.1, and 9.0.

Thanks for getting back to me. The open parameters document does not indicate that there are any URL limitations linking to specific page numbers containing local hard drive or DVD addresses.

So am I correct to assume that the following limitation stated in tech note (pasted below) from an earlier Acrobat User Community forum (http://www.acrobatusers.com/forums/aucb … p?id=15216) is no longer a limitation? Please confirm. And again, Thanks.

Note: If you use UNC server locations (\\servername\folder) in a link, then set the link to open to a set destination using the procedure in the following section. If you use URLS containing local hard drive addresses (c:\folder\), then you cannot link to page numbers or set destinations. With Adobe Acrobat 7.0 products, a link to a page number only works if you use HTTP or HTTPS locations. UNC server locations will only work if you use the set destinations method outlined in the following section of this document.

Hi,

Nattering here but a URLs with the "file://" scheme are not addressed in the Open Parameters document; only the "http://" scheme.

Link paths using the UNC conventions, not being URIs/URLs, are not discussed in the document.

Comes down to testing the examples provided in the document to see what may fit in your desired work flow.
