When you click on a hyperlink in a PDF, what determines the web browser Acrobat uses to navigate to that link?

I have Firefox, IE, and Chrome installed on my PC. Hyperlinks open in IE. I want to open them in Firefox. How do I do that?

Acrobat relies on what the OS has as the set "default".

Be well...

yes, but there has to be more to it than that. I right-click a .html file and go "Open With..." and "Choose Program" and make sure "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file." is checked. And I do the same with a .htm file as well. But it still opens in Firefox.

Unless there's a better way to set your default browser...

HTML files are not the same as the default browser. You need to set the browser as default from within the browser itself. That way it will pick up URL's executed by the system, including from Acrobat.
In IE it's done by clicking on Internet Options - Programs - Set Default button.

How does the browser know that it is or is not the default browser? Is there some registry setting?

Yes. I think it might be the default application associated with URL extensions.

In Firefox, go to Tools > Options and click the Advanced Tab.There's a checkbox to "Always Check to see if Firefox is the default browser." There is also a button for "Check Now."

That should get you there...
