Please let me know as well. I accidently deleted a PDF and when I went to retreive it from my recycle bin it wasn't there.

I am a Forms and Records Analyst for the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems. This position in new to the agency so I am setting the standards.

Hi,
In Windows, Shift+Delete bypasses the recycle bin and makes the space the file sits in available for new stuff.

Also, check your recycle bin (Windows) configuration (presumes no 3rd party software that you have doing the deleted file management).
On the desktop, right click the Recycle Bin.
From the context menu, select Properties.
Under General tab, check the setting for Do not move files to the Recycle Bin
If you want deleted files to go into the bin then don't have this checked.

If your Recycle Bin is managed by some other software (such as Norton or floating desktop "dock" then look over the
appropriate help files.

Be well...

I, too, would like to know what happens to deleted PDF files. They do not appear in the recycle bin along with all of the other deleted items.

I would really like to recover two files that were accidentally deleted.

Thank you,

There's nothing special about a PDF - they *do* go in the recycle bin unless there is some other software on your system preventing it, or you have the entire bin disabled as daka's post explains.

it's well known that you can usually recover any 'deleted' file (regardless of status in recycle bin) with widely available tools.
for example: http://www.ontrackdatarecovery.com/file-recovery-software/
also see section 4.3 File Recovery at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_recovery#File_Recovery

The file is not in the recycle bin. Other deleted items are in the recycle bin. I searched for the deleted file in the root directory using the syntax:

dir *dbook*.pdf file not found

then I searched for:

the missing handbook in the main directory and sub-directories using the following syntax:

dir *dbook*.* /a /s /p

I expected to locate a file with a name something like "~$ndbook for machine. . . ." I found other deleted files, but not the one I need.

I did not continue with document preparation, instead, I started looking for the file.

Is there a reasonably simple way to recover the file?

Thank you,

Larry

rbogie,

Many thanks. I am installing Recuva now, and it looks like exactly what is needed.
