Wrong display of white color

Hi! I an using Adobe reader 9.3.3 on Windows 7 64bit and I have a strange problem: In every pdf file I try to open and the background is white, I see a srtange chessboard-like pattern instead of solid white. This makes the file nearly impossible to read. I tried opening the files in another viewer and the display is OK,so its a Software problem... Any ideas?

Edit - Preferences - Page Display - uncheck "Show Transparency Grid"
