Acrobat 8 EULA

I hope the experts here can help clarify some points in the Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional EULA.

(I) Re Section 14.13 Acrobat Professional Feature

Would using Acrobat 8 Professional to prepare commenting-enabled PDFs for clients be subject to any limitations under the Acrobat 8 EULA? The PDFs would be enabled for commenting using the "Comments > Enabling for Commenting in Adobe Reader" command. The PDFs would not be "forms" in the conventional sense. In other words, there wouldn't be any fields in the documents where the Reader user could enter information and save the data. The user would be able only to annotate or mark-up the PDFs. Further, the user would not be submitting the PDFs with data back to me.

I think the issue is whether such a PDF is an "Extended Document" under paragraph 14.13.1.2 (defining "Extended Document") or a PDF that would otherwise fall under paragraph 14.13.3 (imposing the 500 extraction/recipient limitation). From my reading of the EULA, I don't think either paragraph applies in this situation. Please let me know if I'm mistaken.

(II) Re Section 2.3 Server Use.

As I read section 2.3, I can install Acrobat 8 on one computer and access Acrobat from another computer as long as:

1. Both computers are on a private, "Internal Network";
2. The total number users does not exceed the "Permitted Number" (i.e., number of Acrobat licenses); and
3. An individual initiates the use of Acrobat (as opposed to using it in some completely automated system).

Is my understanding of section 2.3 correct?

Should I be looking at LiveCycle Reader Extensions instead of Acrobat 8 Professional? Is there a license for LiveCycle Reader Extensions just for enabling commenting? I don't think the demands on my workflow will require a heavy-duty solution like LiveCycle Reader Extensions. However, if I use Acrobat 8 Professional, I want to make sure I comply with the EULA.

Thanks in advance for your comments and help.

Hi corbin,

Your use of Commenting as outlined above does not fall under the 500 extraction/recipient limitation. This limitation is associated with PDF forms or documents that have been extended for the purpose of saving/extracting data not Commenting that is initiated within Acrobat.

Yes, you can access Acrobat from another computer as long as you follow restrictions that you've outlined (and that mentioned in the EULA).

Hope this helps,
Lori
