I need to set an action to open a file in an existing window, currently it just opens a new one.

f.setAction("MouseUp", "app.openDoc(\"thisIsAFile.pdf\");" );

My Product Information:
Acrobat Standard 8.1.2, Windows

I think this is a property of Acrobat itself, not of the script.
Look under Edit - Preferences.
