Determining if attachments tab open or not

Is there a way of determining if the attachments tab is currently open or not? I would like to determine this through JavaScript, such as obtaining a true/false value.

I have created a button on a form that opens and closes this tab and toggles it's caption between "View attachments tab" and "Close attachments tab". This works fine except when the user uses the menu or the UI to open or close it. Then the caption does not correspond to the status of this tab any longer. Ideally I would like the button to check if the attachments tab is open or closed and change it's caption accordingly. Any ideas?
