I have a combobox form field in Acrobat 8 Professional. There are subheads to this list that I need to make UNSELECTABLE. Is this possible from within Acrobat?

I know NO scripting, so please format your answer in the most elementary steps. Thanks so much!

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 8.1.3, Macintosh

You want to make them unselectable, but in response to what conditions? I'm assuming you want to have them selectable sometimes, but not always. Also, you also need to explain exactly what you mean by "subheads".

For argument sake, say I'm asking people what county they live in and have them divided by state with the counties below. I don't want them to be able to select a state, EVER. Just the county name.

ALABAMA:
County1
County2
FLORIDA:
County1
County2

I know I could list it like this:
Alabama, County1
Alabama, County2
Florida, County1
Florida, County2

but, my particular items on the list are way too long to make that a reasonable solution. Any ideas?

You cannot set up a combo box like that, but you can set up a button with a popup menu that populates a text box with the user-selected item. Thom Parker wrote a nice article about this: http://www.acrobatusers.com/tutorials/2007/js_popup_menus/
