Enabling Word Search

I simply want to know how to enable the word search option for a scanned document. I have a scanned manual that has been enabled by a colleague, but I don't know what he did (can't ask, he's never here) coz I can't enable it on any of my other scans (even the original of the enabled manual). So how do I make a scan text searchable?
