How do I assign a field to a button?

I am using Adobe Designer 7. I am also a begginer. I am attempting to create a button to perform an average calculation. My problem is that I can not figure out how to assign a field to print the calculated average to. example:
fields 1-5 must be averaged. I also must validate the number range in fields 1-5 as well as validate the number range in the average. The problem is that the validation for fields 1-5 is different than the average. To avoid getting an error for invalid range in the average field, I thought it best to wait to calculate the average once fields 1-5 were entered. I have the calculation for the average that I can assign to a form field but I don't know if that would be different for a button. To sum up my question, I need to know: (a) how to assign a field to print a calculated number from a button? (b) would the simple FormCalc script change to a javascript with button use? Any help with samples would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks

Providing just a sample here won't really help you much. A better assistance to you would be to point you in the direction of learning more about scripting.

First, take a look at the sample files installed with Designer on your hard drive. You can view the scripts used in the sample forms and study them.

Slect the menu commands under the Help menu to access the Deisnger Help Guide, Adobe's online support and the LiveCycle Designer support center. Here you'll find many more sample files and tips and techniques.

Look over as many samples as you can and try to understand some of the basics for scripting forms. After you've written a few scripts and you find yourself facing a tough problem, come back here and ask another question.
