This can be done. Acrobat on Windows can access the ODBC service. It does this through the ADBC object, look it up in the Acrobat JavaScript API Reference. However, this is an Acrobat Professional and Standard only thing. It is not availible in Adobe Reader.
LiveCycle documents have a database access mechanism that does work on Reader, but it requires special Rights Enabling.
