Trying to change field fillColor

I am attempting to add javascript to our pdfs that will allow specific users to change the fillColor of fields by clicking on them. I have script in the mouse up event that seems to be changing the color ok, but the changes don't take effect until a user clicks out of the field. I need for the change to actually take place upon mouse-up.

Any ideas/suggestions?
