Remove Footer/Bates Number won't remove the other

We add a footer indicating the case number to the left side, bates numbers are applied on the right. When we remove the document footer, the case number is removed but the bates number remains. Now, however, Acrobat says there is no bates number found and won't remove it.

How do we fix this? Is there a specific order of operations to remove a bates number and document footer?

Hi WesAtScottsdale,

I tried this in Acrobat 9.3 Pro- first added a Footer ( from Document -> HeaderFooter menu item) with just text on the bottom left. Then I added Bates number to bottom right( from Advanced ->Document Processing ->Bates numbering). I got a dialog that said something like "there is already a footer in this PDF and if you add another they might overlap. I tried both the add and replace options separately. When I tried removing the footer from Document- Header Footer menu item I got the same results as you did- it removes the text on the left but leaves the Bates number on the right. So I went to Advanced ->Document Processing ->Bates Numbering and selected remove. That removed the Bates number.Acrobat is treating the footer text and Bates numbering as two separate items in the content.
Kinda wierd behavior by Acrobat, but since you cannot add a Bates number from the Document ->Header/Footer menu item it is treating them separately and I guess you will have to remove them in a two step process.Hope this helps,

I think I've narrowed down the process some more.

1. Document is scanned, not OCR'd.
2. Advanced -> Document Processing -> Bates Numbering -> Add
2a. Bates number is set with prefix, no suffix, inserted into lower right corner.
2b. Case number is typed into lower left corner within the same header/footer screen in which the bates number is added.
2c. Left and Right margins are set to .5, bottom margin is set to .3
3. Both appearance options are selected.
4. Footer w/Bates is applied.
...
1. document is opened later
2. Advanced -> Document Processing -> Bates Numbering -> Remove
3. Error dialog says - "Acrobat cannot find any Bates Numbering in this file. If you see Bates Numbering information, it was not added in Acrobat or by an Adobe PDFMaker, and cannot be detected as such." (Document is unchanged)
3a. Document -> Header & Footer -> Remove only removes the case number in the lower left corner. The Bates number is untouched. Thanks for your help.

Hi WesAtScottsdale,

When I follow your steps (with the exception that I create a blank PDF to test and not a scan) I get that same message that a Bates number is not detected- Unless I do NOT check the 2 appearance options. With the appearance options left unchecked I am able to remove both the Bates number and text in the footer in 2 steps (can't remove both text and Bates number in one Remove step).

Test out doing this without checking the appearance options and see if you can then remove the Bates number. I would consider this a bug in the software.

Hope this helps,

here's more -- in the specific situation where the appearance options were checked, the bates numbers and footers can be removed by applying PDF optimizer > discard user data > discard all comments ... (however, where the appearance options were NOT checked, the optimizer method does not work; what does work is the previously described two-step method.) also, the footers and bates numers (whether created with appearance options checked or not checked) can be removed from each page (page-by-page) from the content pane (tip: on content pane options menu check 'highlight content'). also, you can remove headers and footers and bates numbers using redaction tool.

How do you remove Bates Numbering in X Pro? (i added them to a pdf via X Pro and now I want to remove them.)

I'm getting the same, "Acrobat cannot find any Bates Numbering in this file. If you see Bates Numbering information, it was not added in Acrobat or by an Adobe PDFMaker, and cannot be detected as such" error?

Thanks much!
