"Word Index"

In the legal field, when deposition transcripts are produced by a service (whose transcriber is present at the deposition), a word index is included that lists every word in the transcript.

A legal assistant asked me if the same could be done with discovery or other produced documents (we frequently scan hard copies to pdf format). I checked Adobe Acrobat 8 Help and found that an embedded index can be created. However, I couldn't figure out if this is something that can be printed. It seems as though an embedded index is used to make searching a document faster.

Do you have any thoughts on this? Any help would greatly appreciated until I can research this issue further.

Thank you.

the word index of a reporter's transcript is created in specialized software. acrobat's embedded (or catalog) index is not the same and cannot be converted to a printable index similar to the reporter's word index. As you observed, an embedded index is used to make searching a document faster. should you want a more detailed response, feel free to shoot me an email via the forum.
