Acrobat appending embedded linked items vs opening them

I'm running Windows XP with Adobe Acrobat Professional 6. After downloading and installing the latest Acrobat Reader (8.1.2), whenever I click on a link (that used to open the linked item in it's native application), the item is now being automatically downloaded and appended to my document as an embedded item. It appears the install for Adobe Reader 8.2.1 changed some setting making this "default" behavior. Any clues on how to correct this? Same behavior now occurs in both Acrobat Professional 6.0 & Acrobat Reader 8.1.2.

The problem you're experiencing is associated with installing both Acrobat and Reader on the same system. It's not recommend having multiple versions of Acrobat or Adobe Reader installed on the same machine because of numerous components that have similar functionality and can cause conflicts on a machine. The most prevalent among these conflicts involves the plug-ins for rendering PDF files in the browser. For more information you can check out the following technical note:
