Acrobat Pro 9 PDF Issues

Hello everyone.

I am having trouble PDFing out of FrameMaker 8. It's acting very flaky with screens disappearing when working through the process. I do File/Print/Setup and choose Adobe PDF. I then go in to "properties" to change job options and then the screen disappears. Then when I go to PDF Setup to choose job options...they are missing.

I just got switched to a 64bit machine...could that have anything to do with it? I never had these issues with my old 32bit machine.

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 9.0, Windows

Both FrameMaker 8 and Acrobat Pro 9 are known to work on Windows Vista 64-bit and Windows 7 64-bit. By 64-bit system, can we assume that you are on either one of those platforms.

Do the problems only occur when printing to the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance from FrameMaker or from other applications as well? It really should not make any difference!

Have you updated your Acrobat Pro 9 with all the updates available from Adobe?

What do you mean by “the screen disappears?” The whole screen goes black? The particular window goes away; i.e. the application (FrameMaker) quits?

When you installed FrameMaker, did you also install the “headless” version of Distiller that is bundled with FrameMaker as well as the full Adobe Acrobat Pro 9? If so, that special “headless” version of Distiller cannot coreside on a system with full Acrobat. If you have done this, I would totally uninstall Acrobat, uninstall this special Distiller, and then fully reinstall Acrobat.

More information and hopefully we can better assist you!

Thank you Dov for replying!

Actually, we are still using Windows XP. Our company is upgrading to Windows 7 in the near future. Some already have it.

We are just noticing the issues in FrameMaker. Microsoft programs such as Word and Excel PDF just fine.

FrameMaker 8.0 and Acrobat Pro 9.4.6 were just installed on our new computers and all updates were completed. We double checked to make sure they were actually installed and not just copied over from our old machines.

When I go to File/Print and click on printer "Setup" it opens the Printer Setup window. I choose "Adobe PDF" option and then go to Properties to choose the appropriate job option. When I'm in the Properties window and try to click on the job option the whole screen disappears. I have to click on my tool bar to bring it back up and if I don't click fast enough it goes away again. It's like a race. lol! Strange!

That is a good question and I have a feeling that the FM distiller did not get turned off when installed. We are checking with IT to be certain. When we installed the program ourselves that was something we unchecked during the installation process in years past.

I hope my answers help. I appreciate everything you have come up with so far!

OK! You say that you are on a “64-bit machine.” Are you running the 64-bit version of Windows XP? If not, then the 64-bit aspect of the hardware is irrelevant. If you are running the 64-bit version of Windows XP, you should be aware that Adobe does NOT officially support 64-bit Windows XP. The 64-bit version of Windows XP was more of an experiment on the part of Microsoft than a real production environment. The first reliable version of 64-bit Windows came with Vista and then Windows 7. If you are really running 64-bit Windows XP, that could account for quite a bit of strange behaviour!
