I have a question about PDF/A.

Is there any way to convert older office files (Office 97 and older) to PDF/A-1a? It dosen't seem to be possible in Acrobat 8 Pro, but I don't know about Acrobat 9 Pro? It's not possible in Distiller 8 neither. Is there possibly any other non-adobe software that could do this?

Another problem is that Acrobat 8 Pro requires the office suite (Office 2000 and newer) installed to convert to PDF/A-1a, and maybe requires other software suites to convert from other file formats than office files (haven't tried it yet though).

Tobias - you should be able to convert older Office files by opening them in a newer version and then creating PDF. What happens when you exercise the option to create PDF/A-1a on such files ? Also, what Office application are you using?
