Adobe 8 pro & Quark --previously made PDF missing images & text

I had a problem today with a Ver 8 PDF that I think worked fine previously. It was generated by exporting from Quark, probably Q ver 8.1...but possibly 7.3.

When I opened the PDF this afternoon to print it, some of the images & text had vanished on the main screen. The text appeared in the left-hand preview screen tho! Very odd. I tried refreshing but got no improvement.

This was an optimized (smaller) file - the larger version (pre-optimization) appeared to be fine, and printed all components. I tried deleting & remaking the optimized version several times. None would load correctly.

Also - my system was running very, very slowly.

So I shut things down, rebooted & am running an adware removal program. But I want to know if a virus could do this? My virus protection is on daily-update, so it functions constantly with the exception of occasional crashes. But I'm not sure how the PDF viruses behave.

Any clues as to why this weirdness would happen?
Thanks

Hi Lynwaz,

When you export to PDF from Quark it uses a third-party PDF library - so not Adobe Acrobat (Distiller).

Have you tried 'printing' to the Adobe PDF Printer and then seeing if the same problems exist? Remember to double check your 'Adobe PDF' settings before you make the PDF - try say PDF/X-1a for print related work.

Let us know how you get on,

Jon

I've been using Acrobat since v1.0 and still get amazed by its power. An Acrobat ACE since 1999

Thank you - I have NOT tried printing to the Adobe Printer...I will try to do so tomorrow - However, I did try experimenting with a different Quark 8 PDF & then optimizing it...this time beginning with a 16 pg newsletter, not a "simple" 4-pager. The newsletter optimized just fine. So...I am beginning to think this is a faulty Quark file, tho I don't know how (or if) it got corrupted.I may try also remaking the Quark file on a Version 8 base (it was converted from an earlier version.) Maybe the PDFs will generate properly then.

The interesting thing to me is- I can print just fine on my HP 2800-PS (Business Jet) from that larger (non-optimized) PDF. I wouldn't even bother shrinking it more, if I didn't want to email the result. :)

I'll get back with the results of your suggestion, tho Jon. I never thought of that.

Well, I tried printing to AdobePrinter via my HP2800PS Business Inkjet. I thought it was going to work out fine - because when it created the PDF, it came out around 200K instead of 1800K as it did thru the Quark-Export-to-PDF (thirdparty, as Jon so helpfully pointed out )

The file looked ok on the screen - no missing pics, etc. as appeared on the optimized file I discussed at the opening of this thread.

I thought it was printing out fine ..BUT - One image (it's a largish tif, pushed into a smallish space) comes out as a ghosted image...ie, there is color above & below the .tif file, but the image itself is streaky-gray, instead of aqua. & it's very faint. So - I suspect there's a setting screwed up somewhere. But my original 1800k export will print fine on this printer.

& possibly, the Adobe Printer PDF (which I didn't optimize, since it was already small)
could be used for emailing, since images show up on the screen. It might even print out ok on other printers. The HP2800 drivers have not been updated by HP recently. Last time I checked, it sounded as if they were discontinuing this printer. So I can't blame Adobe for this problem.

I'll live with the workaround, I guess. Thanks so much tho. & if someone knows what happened to that .tif image, I'd love to have it explained... :)
