Adobe 8.1 Standard has started to crash when "Create PDF" is selected

I have Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard. It has been recently updated to the latest standard (8.1) I have a Canon MP830 multi-function printer/scanner with all the latest drivers downloaded.

Other Acrobat functionality works, it is just when selecting Create PDF that the application crashes every time. The Acrobat Scan window opens then after a few seconds greys out and the application hangs. It is not recoverable.

I have updated all printer/scanner drivers and used Acrobat Standard Update and Acrobat Repair without success. Adobe support told me that 8.1 is unsupported and suggested I buy Acrobat X (what a surprise!)

Concerned that the cause and fix is unclear. Can anyone help? I would not upgrade without ensuring that this problem would not reoccur with new software.

With the grab bag of Windows OSs in use "What OS is used?" has to be asked. If Windows 7 it may be that (even with all software updated) the Canon MFD isn't Win 7 compatible. As to Acrobat, Acrobat X would be desired.
.

Be well...

I have been on Windows 7 since launch with no problems whatsoever with Canon MP830 MFD compatibility. They work really well together. Adobe Acrobat 8 worked fine too, until recently. I suspect a product upgrade to one or the other has caused the problem and I am unwilling to pay the cost of Acrobat X without certainty that it will resolve the issue. Frustrating that the adobe product is unsupported too. Is there a software fix?
