Adobe continuously crashes when trying to "Create PDF From Scanner"

Hi, I'm new to the forum -- I have Adobe 8 Professional on a Windows XP (SP3). I had not tried to create a pdf document via the scanner until today so I don't know if it's always been a problem in waiting, or if it's the new Brother printer I have. It's a Brother wireless 4in1. It scans fine itself, but I want to scan into pdf from Adobe. But every time I click the "Create PDF" button and select "By Scanner," the window opens momentarily, then I get the "Adobe Acrobat 8.1 has encountered a problem and needs to close..." No error message or explanation. It has the current updates (selected 8.1.2 below but it's actually 8.1.3). I'm at a loss as to where to go with this. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 8.1.2, Windows

Hi I have exactly the same problem with Adobe 8. Creating a PDF using scanner worked fine when I was using Widows XP SP2. Upgraded to a new PC with OS Vista64 and re-loaded Adobe 8. Now I get the same error when trying to "Create PDF" using scanner. Is there and issue with XP SP3 or Vista compatibility?

I am also having the same problems with a different printer and Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro.

Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 was recently installed on new Vista 64bit computer and functions with all programs and even prints to my Dell 1600n printer, but when I try to scan from the printer, it causes this error message and shuts Acrobat down:

"ADOBE ACROBAT HAS STOPED WORKING A Problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

When attempting to use the create pdf from scanner not only does Adobe shut down, but the printer is given a command to print hundreds of lines of weird code of numbers hearts circles diamonds and clubs. It has to be unplugged and the usb cable disconnected to stop it spooling.

Still no solution from Adobe and no response to an email that I sent to adobe support nearly a month ago.

Adobe knows the fix but wants $$ to tell me what it is. The tech (to his credit) said I could find the fix in the Adobe Knowledgebase - has anyone?

The same scanner works fine with Photoshop, Word and other apps - so its obviously a known Acrobate bug.

I wonder if the Indian support people learn American slang CHICKEN-S**T

Non-Acrobat variables.
The scanner's drivers. These need to be current and appropriate for the OS.
Hardware conflict(s)? Use the Windows OS's event viewer to check for issues.
Have scanner on prior to boot up of Windows to facilitate Windows detection of the device.

Thanks again to DAKA630

By coincidence after figuring this out I got an update to my "ATT Self-Support Tool" 6.1.0.24 and this update itself fixed the problem!! I wish ATT had been a week earlier.

Slightly off topic. I'm running adobe acrobat professional 9 with vista home premium. Have been scanning without problem for a year. Then bang. Adobe cannot find the scanner. Solution. Look for other software and kiss off adobe. Found cutepdf. ran it in evaluation format. All goes well. Then tried adobe one last time. Adobe must have gotten the message, because it is now finding my scanner and all seems well *at the moment.*
