After combining PDF files links not working

I have multiple files in MS Office 2003 Word that I convert to PDF while in Word (using the Acrobat plug in).
All of the files internal and external links (cross references and hyperlinks) still work after conversion to PDF.
When I use Acrobat 8.1.1 standard to combine the files into a single PDF file (Binder or Package) the links no longer work.
Am I expecting too much of Acrobat 8 Standard ??

The links won't work when you combine them into a PDF Package; however, they should work when you combine them into a single PDF. What process are you using to Combine the files in Acrobat (i.e., Create PDF from multiple files or using the Combine menu?) Are the files in Word format before you combine them or PDF?

Hi,
Sorry for delay in answering, this problem is on back burner pending finishing all the docs.
Files are in Word, then individually converted to PDF then combined.

Hi,
Tried another approach. Cross references within each Word doc and hyper links between each Word doc work as before. Used Acrobat Combine Files to do conversion to PDF. Cross references active within Binder but hyper links within the Binder cause pop-up "There was an error opening this document. This file cannot be found". It makes sense unless the conversion process is supposed to retain the hyperlinks as valid destinations.
Regards.
