All scanned documents require preflight?

As a new user of Acrobat X (used 7 for ages) I scan document to be saved as pdf/A-1b. Every time I am directed to preflight to correct the file. No problems emerge on preflight. What is going on?
The newbie thanks you all.

Acrobat Pro 10.0.2, Windows

Hi can you provide a couple of more details. You say you scan the document and then it's asking you to correct the file why is the file being pre-flighted is it going to press? Just some more details for clarification please.

Thought I might get a request for more information
1. use acrobat to scan from Brother MFC. Preset is front side only, black and white, 600 dpi, optimized for higher quality, and run OCR. Output is "export file(s) to alternate format - PDF/A.
2. scan comes up on Acrobat
3. however, a "warnings/errors" dialog box also comes up with the following message: "The document has been saved, however,it could not be converted according to the selected standard profile: convert to PDF/A. Please use preflight with the profile "convert to PDF/A" in order to identify those properties of the document which prevent it f" (the message cuts off here).
4. I then analyze and fix in preflight using the "Convert to PDF/A-1b (sRGB)" profile.
5. the scanned document then re-saves indicating that is is a PDF/A and is read only.
6. the summary report reads like this:
Preflight Summary Report for: 1 side scan_201162115520.pdf
Profile: Convert to PDF/A-1b (sRGB) (Processed pages 1 to 6)
Processed by Charles Watson, Date: 6/7/2011 12:23 PM
Fixups
Convert to PDF/A-1b (1 object)
Make document XMP Metadata compliant with PDF/A-1 (2 objects) Remove document structure compression
(2 objects)
Recompress LZW as ZIP (1 object)
Convert color to sRGB (2622 objects)

Results (Summary)
No problems found

This is what I would do in this case. I would take the scan straight to a different file format. For example here I have photoshop so I would save the scan as a .jpg. This by-passes all of the "pre flighting" etc. If you're scanning the document you won't have any issues with fonts etc so no need to pre-flight. If you want to do a pdf for viewing purposes you can then save that jpg. as a PDF from your program. Photoshop is what I have and would use but obviously there's several different programs out there.

Pre-flight is so that you can ensure you have a properly set PDF file with fonts, colors etc. I hope this makes sense.

Can you clarify exactly the commands you are using? Are you using the Create > PDF from Scanner command. If so, where are you seeing the "Output" option?

I am using an "action".
The first step uses the profile outlined above.
The second (last) step saves to a folder on my computer with the output format outlined above (in output options).

The same thing happens if I use the PDF from scanner command with the B&W preset which I have set to make pdf/a-1b in the document settings section; andthen save a a pdf/a.

Thanks for the clarification. The Preflight fixup is occurring during the Save As process. To prevent the Preflight fixup from running go to Edit > Preferences > Convert From PDF. Select PDF/A from the Converting From PDF panel. Next, select the Edit Setting... button and at the bottom of the Preflight: Convert to PDF/A dialog uncheck the "Apply corrections" box.

Thank you.

I understand your answer, and if this were a different situation I would take up that method. BUT, these documents are exhibits that will be filed online with a court that requires PDF/A.
I am doing all of this by myself, no staff, and have to scan, and at least prepare for use, some 10-20 documents (20-100 pages), every day (sometimes quite a bit more: today I got a banker's box of paper -- some 100+ large docs). And for my use everything needs to be OCR'd for indexing. I am trying for the most efficient process possible.

Thank you.

I was not clear. It did not preflight automatically, I had to preflight to get the scan to save as a pdf/a. That being said, your response led me directly to what I needed to do. I checked the dialog, and now all is well.

Well.... almost. Acrobat will not keep the setting. I make the changes in preferences, things work. But after I close and reopen Acrobat, the preferences have reverted and the program acts as it did before - requiring me to manually preflight a file before it will save as pdf/a.

I guess I'll start looking at that problem.

Again -- thank you!

I am using Adobe Acrobat Pro 9. When I select advanced/preflight to select a profile, "convert to PDF/A-1b" is not listed as an option under PDF/A Compliance. It was there before. "Convert to PDF/A-1a" is still an option. Can anyone tell me where it went and how I can get it back? My group has used this for about 2 months, now suddenly there are a few of us who no longer have the option. I appreciate any advice. Thanks
