Bookmark Destination Problems

Hi,

I've been having some problems setting the destinations of bookmarks in Acrobat Pro 9. If the destination is in the top half of the page then there's no problem, however if the destination is in the bottom half of the page, then the destination automatically sets itself to the top of the next page.

How can I overcome this?

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 9.1.1, Macintosh

Are your pages set up to scroll continuously or page by page?

I'm having a slightly different problem with pdf bookmarks when converting MS Word headings into rendered pdf bookmarks. While most of the Word headings are properly rendered as pdf bookmarks, many of them point to erroneous page locations in the pdf. I’ve tested a number of MS Word-to-pdf conversion settings to correct this problem, but nothing seems to work. Each time I attempt a conversion, I get different results: most bookmarks work correctly while others send me to undefined locations in a previous chapter of the pdf (365 pages). Given that there’s no set pattern or trend with this problem, I’ve been unable to diagnose why it’s happening and what I can do about it. Very frustrating! I hope the Adobe Acrobat online community will be able to provide clues about what’s going wrong. Some online posts indicate similar problems with bookmarks when converting from other software (e.g. InDesign) to pdf. BTW--I'm using Acrobat 9 Pro Extended for XP.

Do you have multiple versions of Acrobat installed on your system? What version of Word are you using?

Thanks for your prompt reply. Acutally yes, I have Acrobat 4 in addition to having Acrobat 9 loaded on my machine. I'm using Word 2007. I tried one more conversion using the "smallest file" default setting. This seemed to correct the problem. Perhaps the "standard" default setting was taking too many system resources to properly render the pdf? Or do you think there is a conflict between the two versions of Acrobat on my machine?

I now have another problem. After removing Acrobat 4 from my machine, Acrobat 9 no longer allows me to generate pdfs. I assume that Acrobat 4 is required to authenticate my Acrobat 9 upgrade (and my discs are miles away from my current locatation). Dah!

Hi cjm,
Perhaps access to the Acrobat 4 discs is not needed.
From an Adobe TechNote (first link) there is a statement that upgrades to Acrobat 9 from Acrobat 5.x (or earlier) are not available (see second quote for full list).
But you have Acrobat 9, no?
That came with a serial number to be used for activation (unless it is the trial release or from corporate/volume licensing).
Look over the TechNote at the first link for applicable guidance.

Quote:
Note: Adobe Technical Support does not recommend or support having multiple versions of Acrobat or Adobe Reader installed on the same machine (for example Acrobat 8, with Adobe Reader 9 or Acrobat 7 with Adobe Reader 8). Acrobat and Adobe Reader have numerous components that have similar functionality and can cause conflicts on a machine. The most prevalent among these conflicts involves the plug-ins for rendering PDF files in the browser, PDFMaker inside of Office Applications, and the Adobe PDF printer. Using the Version Interoperability table [in the link above], remove all versions of Acrobat and Adobe Reader, and then install the current version.

The following products do not qualify for an upgrade to Acrobat 9:

Acrobat 5.x or earlier
Acrobat Elements
Acrobat Business Tools
Acrobat Approval
Adobe Reader
Acrobat Reader
Acrobat Reader-Writer
Acrobat Distiller PE or LE, or any version of Acrobat Distiller that's bundled with Adobe PageMaker or Adobe FrameMaker

Try doing a Repair Acrobat Installation from under the Help menu for Acrobat 9 to see if it corrects the problem.

If just using Acrobat 9 to create your PDFs from Word doesn't correct the bookmark problems, try renaming your Word Normal.dot file. Sometimes this file carries with it unnecessary content that may be causing some problems as well.

I am using Word 2007 and Acrobat 9 Std.

Using Word, I created a two-page resume. Using the Adobe Preferences feature in Word, I selected the headings to use as bookmarks and generated the PDF. In Acrobat, all bookmarks appear correctly in the Bookmark pane.

The bookmarks pointing to a destination on the first page of the resume and to the top of the second page work fine (the displayed document "moves" up so that the destination is in the top left of the Display pane).

However, when I select a bookmark whose destination is on the lower half of the second page, the document does not move at all.

The bookmark properties all appear to be the same.

I have tried to manually change the bookmark, but there is no change in the display.

QUESTION:
1) Is this standard because it is only a 2-page document?

2) If not, what settings in Word/Acrobat would correct this?

3) What impact does the View/Zoom % have when assigning bookmarks?

Thanks for any input!

Can you post an example? Acrobat.com has a free service for doing this.
