When I combine multiple files into one Adobe package (I'm using verison 8.0), I get the bookmarks and panel page on the left, however, it inserts all major headings in each of the documents and creates a bookmark for each. When you delete some of them, the first bookmark showing (the one you want for the document), you cannot set the destination. I end up deleting all bookmarks made and start from scratch in the adobe document. Is there a setting or preference that I can say, just create the bookmarks based on the names of my documents, not the content of the document? Thanks.

When you combine your PDFs there is an "Options" button at the bottom left of the Combine Files dialog. Make sure that the "Always add bookmarks to Adobe PDF" is not checked. This will not add the bookmarks within each PDF. This will just leave the Bookmarks to each document with their names as the bookmark text.

Actually that doesn't work. I had tried that option before and the combined pdf file still creates the bookmarks with a main bookmark heading and then sub headings of the bookmark which are main headings contained within the document.

Are you using the Combine files command to create a PDF Package? Are the files that you're combining native Word docs or existing PDFs?

I am using the Combine files command. I am using a combination of Word documents and excel documents but the bookmarks with subheadings come from the word documents.

The Combine files command calls the PDFMaker macro in Word to convert to PDF. This means you'll need to turn off the Bookmark feature (if you don't want them) in Word. Under the Adobe PDF menu in Word select Change Conversion Settings. Under the Settings tab deselect "Add Bookmarks to Adobe PDF". Under the Bookmarks tab deselect "Convert Word Heading to Bookmarks".
