Combining multiple Wordperfect files and others

Hi,

We often need to create huge PDF book based on 50-60 files from Wordperfect 8 (WPD), CorelDraw and more.

Today we have to create each and every single PDF document from the abiove appl's at first (by printing to Acrobat), then we combine the 50-60 PDF files.

This works fine, but is the no way to have Acrobat simply generating (converting) all the files automatically in the process of using the "Combine PDF from Multiple Files" command in order to avoid the manual step of creating 50-60 files first?

Other products like Nuance PDF can do this task with Wordperfect and CorelDraw, so it would be expected that Acrobat can do the same.

Alternatively, is the 3rd pary plug-ins which will do the trick?

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 9.2, Windows

Bon dias,

Corel provides thier own process for "doing PDF"; consequently, the various flavors of Corel file formats are not associated with those that Acrobat supports.

Corel (for WPX4) wrote:
"Import, edit, archive and export PDF documents with built-in PDF features—no Adobe® Acrobat® required!"
Certainly, it would be helpful to end-users if Corel products were included in the population of Acrobat supported file formats. However, that's a business call Corel makes.
Some years ago Microsoft worked with Adobe with the result being the Adobe PDFMaker
that provides the robust support for MS Word to PDF as well as PDF output support for other MS Office applications.
As I recall, there was a major conference held in Washington state to demonstrate the fruit of this collaborative effort.
Perhaps Corel & Adobe will work together, at some point, to do something similar.
A good example of software house collaboration is that which exists between Bently-Microstation and Adobe.

Thanks for the input, but how can it be then that NUANCE PDF can convert COREL files, but not "PDF no.1. Adobe"?

Hi,

Going through business news identifies that Corel has a business arrangement with Nuance.
WP is using a Nuance product (Dragon Speak). Corel is also using other Nuance products.

Again, a Corel business decision; and as such, does not mean Acrobat is "deficient".
Rather, it means Corel will be provided users of WP with something better for meeting user's demands for PDF.
As I stated earlier, previous support for PDF, by WP was, imo, anemic.
My 2 cents - Corel+Nuance is a "win" for regular WP users.

Of course, Corel is having to pay Nuance - tnstaafl

As PDF is now an ISO standard I suspect we will see continued improvement in the non-Adobe products that "do PDF".
Getting there won't be cheap; so, I'd expect the "good stuff" to price out at or about what Acrobat does

To me, it comes down to a choice. If the main deliverable is PDF and you need to be able to do to the PDF that which Acrobat does then you go with authoring applications that integrate gracefully with Acrobat. For me, that is Adobe's TCS1 & TCS2 (with occasional MS Office as a side dish).
For Corel, it appears the main player is Nuance products.
Perhaps, if like myself, your deliverable can only be shipped out after the final "buff 'n smooth" with Acrobat, then it may be time to consider alternate authoring applications.

Do the tools define the deliverable or does the deliverable define the tools?
Finding the right balance can be interesting, no?

Since it is only a simple click to create a pdf file from a Wordperfect document (I have an icon for the purpose on my menu bar), I think you are already using the most efficient means to create the pdf files and combine them into a single pdf using Acrobat Pro "Combine from Multiple Files." This way, you also have control over the sequential order of the individual files in the final document.

Thank you for the input, but I don't agree. Using NUANCE PDF instead, you can select multiple files from Windows Explorer (Word files, Wordperfect files, Excel....etc), then rightclick and choose "Combine". You will then be prompted for sequential order and the final PDF will be created....that is in just one task!

I would expect similar functionality with Acrobat as we prefer to stay with Acrobat, but it sounds like we'll have to go with Nuance in future.

I think you have answered your own question, and found the best way. I have not used Nuance, so cannot comment on its accuracy, etc. Good luck.
