In Word, select "No Fill" for the text box.

What settings are you using in the Format Text Box dialog's Fill pane?

I am using the white for fill then toning the transparency to 56%.. if I check no fill I lose the capacity to use the transparecy slider bar....

Hi,

Unfortunately, I cannot duplicate what you are experiencing.

Put some images into Word.
One from an inside photo & one from a mid-day pool photo.
So, a "darker" and a "lighter" color palette.

Used Word 2000, 2002, 2007 / Acrbat 8.x & 9.x
Output PDF from each did not exhibit what you've described.
Word 2000's semi-transparency came through ok.
More choice with 2002 & 2007. Both output PDFs ok.
Did note that transparency between 0 - 25 % did not leave much to "see through".

Just a thought.
Part of Adobe's PDFMaker configuration is the Distiller job option that will be used.
You may want to look at the configuration of the in use job option's Image category.
Might want to make a custom job option to play with.

Also, before opening Word 2003, establish Adobe Printer as the default printer.
Prior to Office 2007, Word locked in printer metrics for the default printer.
This may be contributing to your issue.
