When converting individual Word 2002 documents to PDF (using the File > Print to Adobe PDF option), then combining the PDF files into one document using Acrobat 8.1.6 Prof, the Table of Content links do not work.

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 8.1.6, Windows

Hi,

To pass the links laid down with MS Word, with the hyperlink tool, into the PDF you will need to use PDFMaker.
PDFMaker is installed with the installation of Acrobat and provides the ability to pass links from various MS Office applications on into an output PDF.

Using File > Print > Adobe PDF printer runs the Word file straight through Adobe Distiller.
No links or other features found in PDFMaker "pass through".

So, do use PDFMaker. Use the "configure" feature to select "Add Links to Adobe PDF".

Remember, only the content author controls what the target file is.
PDFMaker does not change the link syntax set by the Word hyperlink you establish.
So, a link to a file ending in a file extension of *.doc will, in the PDF, look for that specific *.doc file you set as the target and not the *.pdf of the PDF file you make from this *.doc file.

i.e., your target file, for the Word hyperlink is "Doc2.doc"; in the PDF the target file will still be "Doc2.doc", nothing else.

Finalize all the Word files then make a PDF from each. Or, initially, make a place holder PDF that has the same file name (e.g., Doc2.pdf)
In your Word file that is to be contain the links to these files, set the hyperlink target to the appropriate PDF.

When you combine files into one PDF, that's what you have; one, not several files.
The links, on the "toc" file are looking for the *.doc files (or, if set so, the *.pdf files) down a specific path.
If the paths and the respective target files are still viable, from the physical location of the combined (Binder) PDF file then the link works.
If the paths or their targets are not viable, then the link does not work.

Regardless, the link is not pointing to a location within the combined PDF file so it cannot "go there".

Thank you for your prompt reply.

If I understand you correctly, I need to reset the links in the PDF version of the Table of Content so they point to the PDF files? With Table of Contents averaging 6 pages per user guide, that's a lot of work and time I do not have. We will have to do without the links. This is disappointing :-(

Hi nboutet,
Something to consider -
If I understand correctly, you have a stand alone Word file in which you entered text denoting other Word files/content and made the Word hyperlink to these.

You could convert each of the other Word docs to PDF. This gives you a PDF target file for the hypertext links.
Now, convert the Word "toc" file to PDF. In this PDF, the links will pull up the appropriate PDF.

With several PDFs, you might consider trying an Acrobat 8 "Package" rather than combining files.
Some PDF Package tutorials are available here, at AUC.

When converting Word 2002 in Windows XP using Adobe 5 and 6, either version does not convert the TOC. Hyperlinks do not convert either. Could you help?
