Thank you Donna Baker for your answer, but it seems that I am getting just a single space between the letters of what I am copying and the find/replace method you suggested didn’t work, even with the ^s. What else can I try to replace these spaces in an automatic way?

That is the only way to make the replacements in the source files. Sorry I can't offer any more suggestions.
