You need to add your watermark after creating the PDF from Word, and you need Acrobat Professional to add a watermark.
In Acrobat Pro, go to Document -> Add Watermark and Background, then in the dialog there is an option in the "Type" area for setting the watermark to appear behind or on top of the page.Hope that helps,
