Creating "Lighter" PDFs

My project manager is creating PDF files directly from Microsoft Project. Problem is, each PDF is incredibly "heavy", with layers and layers of graphical data. Each page takes like 15 seconds to build and then has to re-build every time I zoom or view another page.

Is there a way to create PDFs via MS Project that are just glorified screen shots for fast viewing and fast printing? These PDFs that its currently spitting out are almost like high-rez Illustrator files designed for commercial printing purposes.

I do not use Project, but as a general rule, follow these steps to create a low res PDF (assuming you have Acrobat Professional):
Choose Print, select Adobe PDF as the printer. Select the Properties button. Change the default settings to Smallest File Size. Select OK and print as ususal. The resulting file should be very small.

Another option for the PDFs that are already created: Open the file and then under the File menu choose "Reduce File Size".

If the content is heavy with vector content - the file might be the same weight as such since image quality and embedding policies might not make any difference.

It's almost all though you want an image PDF - check your options in Project's print menu prior to converting to PDF ...

PS - a beefy PC with Acrobat 8 is another solution ....

I've been using Acrobat since v1.0 and still get amazed by its power. An Acrobat ACE since 1999

I've found that Project 2007 and acrobat 9 do not play as well together as project 2003 and acrobat 8.

Even though I'm on a new computer, PDF creation is taking noticeably longer.

I tried using "smallest file size" as you suggested, but did little to change the time to PDF.
