creating small files from hi res PDFs

I've been supplied with a large number of hi res print-ready PDFs (typically 4mb) that i need to convert to smallest possible, readable files that can be downloaded, for reading a personal printing. These are mostly 4-page features with large images and type. Ideally I'd like to be able to reduce file sizes to below 1mb - grateful for the settings in Optimiser to set these to. At the moment I have colour, greyscale and monochrome images set to 72 but the file sizes are still quite large.
Thanks

If you want you readers having a better experience downgrade images to 150 dpi, JPG mini, it always have a better rendering than images 72 dpi, JPG medium (end user can zoom to 200% without seing pixels).

Also, choosing an Acrobat 7 compatibility let you select the JPEG2000 format for images compression...
Which is always a better choice (for file size).
