Efficient bookmarking

I create Health & safety files for the construction industry and all the information comes in various forms AutoCAD, Word, Excel, Scanned pdfs, etc. I compile all the documents into 1 fully bookmarked PDF document.

The issue i have is if I create a PDF from AutoCAD using the PDF maker it creates a book mark of the drawing number and sets the zoom level to FIT PAGE (this is correct as it enables you to see the whole drawing).

However if i have been sent PDF's of drawings or word documents and i compile then using the "Create PDF from Multiple files" and merge then into one. I can create bookmarks or leave them as the file name and let it create my document. When you open the PDF and select a Bookmark it is saved as Zoom level "FIT WIDTH".

How can i get it to default to FIT PAGE during this process or globally change it after creation (most documents have about 200 drawings in so it can be very time consuming to edit each bookmark's zoom level?

Thank you for your help

Hi --

You can easily fix the situation using a batch sequence. Choose Advanced > Document Processing > Batch Sequence. Follow the dialog boxes. In the Edit Sequence dialog, add the Open Options from the Document listing. Double-click the setting to open the Set Open Options dialog box, at the upper right select the magnification you want to use.Proceed through the remaining dialog boxes to save and store the batch sequence.

You can read more on batch sequences in my recent article here: http://acrobatusers.com/tutorials/2007/10/baking_batch_of_pdf/

Donna,

Thank you for the advice, The batch processing will be very useful for some of things i have to do. However i have had a play and it does not do what i want with the bookmarks. I can get each individual pdf to have a magnification of Fit to page, but when i combine then using the create pdf from multi files (this give the file name as the bookmark) it is still fit width as the magnification in the bookmark.

I could not see any option in the batch processing options or the create pdf that governs this.

I am missing a trick?

Hi --

I'm not sure if this is answering your question, but once you have combined the file, try setting the view for the combined file in the Document settings.

If i understand you right, you have problems with the bookmarks. It doesnt matter if the document i set for "fit page", if the bookmarks that is generated is set for "fit width". I am working with about the same stuff that you do. And its realy bugs me when acrobat do this. I also have the problem that the "Destination" option is missing for autogenerated bookmarks (the icon looks like 2 pages instead of one). So i cant change the zoom level on the bookmarks. The only solution for me is to delete the autogenerated bookmarks and make my own (this relay take time). Or i can make an bookmark in every single pdf file that i want to merge, then it autogenerates a faulty bookmark with my bookmark under it, then i can drag my bookmark where i want it. This is unfortunately not an solution to your problem, but you are not alone with this problem!

I hope you can understand what i mean, english i not my native language =)
