Have you tried using File > Save As > Reader Extended PDF > Enable Additional Features

There are 3 levels of Adobe Reader Extended PDFs, this menu choice opens up all 3. Making it the most editable and savable in Reader.

Also, you need Adobe Reader 9 or 10 to Save PDFs (or the full version of Acrobat). Adobe Reader 8 and older could never save.

Your a star, thank you so much for that!! It worked :)

Just a quick concern though; if i wanted to distribute the form through the program and not manually send it out, will it still enable the recipient to save the content? And will it still collate once returned, or does it have to be manually done?

Thanks again :)

Not exactly: Extended PDFs works with Reader X, 9 and 8.
They also works with Reader 7.1 but it's not supported.

Merlin, the Save Feature doesn't work in Reader 8 or older. You've been able to add Extended Features for certain things since version 7, but I was referring to Save, specifically for Form Data.

I don't understand what "Save" feature you're talking about…

Reader 1 to 9 cannot save.
Reader 10 can save comments only, but not on forms.

For Reader being able to save a form the PDF needs to be Reader-enabled, this feature came with Acrobat 8 Pro and Reader 8.
(Acrobat and Reader 7 supports typewriter-enabling and comments-enabling features, but not for forms)
It's not really documented/supported but fortunately Reader 7.1 can save Reader-enabled PDF forms too.

Did I mess something ?

(Please, be lenient since english is not my native language...)

Merlin,

Acrobat 9 was the version that allowed the creator of a PDF to enable the Save button for people who only have the Free Reader (when filling out PDF forms, this is especially important). From the help documentation it may allow saving in Reader 8 also, but I don't have a copy to test currently (and Adobe is ending support for Acrobat 8).

Does that make sense? This is a nice thing to enable for people who only have the Free Reader. It was a HUGE feature request.

Hi Kelly,

This feature came with Acrobat 8 Professionnal : http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Acrobat/8.0/Professional/help.php?content=WS58a04a822e3e50102bd615109794195ff-7e0d.php

And saving works until Reader 7.1, I tested it.

Merlin,

WONDERFUL! Thank you for testing and for the follow up. I need to dig up some old copies myself and try it out.
