Hello,
Acrobat 8.1.1
Win XP sp2 with all updates
Framemaker 7.2p158
The following "problem" came up:
using "print to file" from the print command in FM takes up 10 times longer to generate the PS-file than to make the TPS-file if the "Save as PDF" command is used.
FM book with 26 files, about 220 pages, about 200 referenced graphic-files in TIF-format, all book-files are opened before printing/saving.
Using "print to file" took 1 minute to process the ps-file, using "Save as PDF" took 30 seconds to generate the TPS-file.
When using EPS graphic-files instead of TIF the PS-file generation took about 5 minutes.
With "Save as PDF" it took 30 seconds also with EPS to make the TPS-file.
The "simple" question: why does it take so much longer when I use the "Print to file"-command?
Thank you in advance.
Best wishes
Stephan Will
When you "print" to PDF, you are forcing FrameMaker to write out Postscript and then hand it over to Distiller.
When you Save to PDF, FrameMaker is probably generating the Postscript more quickly and passing to Distiller directly. Although the process is essentially the same, we can be more efficient about connecting the two processes.
The particulars about EPS vs TIF would require me to not only speculate, but to do so wildly. The long and short of it is that the best route to PDF is to Save it as-not to print to PDF.
