Inability to create custom page sizes

I am trying to create a custom page size in Acrobat Professional 8.0. Neither I (using XP Tablet Edition) nor anybody in my office (using XP) can get Acrobat 8.0 to save a custom page size. I click "Add", give the new page size a name, specify the dimensions, then click "Add/Modify"
 
This operation fails both from the PDF maker Properties menu in Word and the Print Setup Properties menu in Acrobat. I can't find anything about this specif problem amongst previous questions. Our printing services office has the same problem. Any idea?
