Letter-sized document scans to legal in Adobe

When I scan a letter-sized document, it shows up in Adobe 9.1.0 as legal-sized. I don't want to necessarily change the default to letter because sometimes I am scanning legal-sized documents, but why is it defaulting to legal? The paper size default is "Automatic" with no other options.

I did figure out a way to do this on a case-by-case basis, but it was a lot of clicks and I do a lot of scanning. It is too involved to go through it every time.

The scanner is a HP5590.

Thanks.

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 9.1, Windows

I am having the same problem which I never had before when scanning from HP officejet pro 8500 to adobe 9.4.1 and now 9.4.2. Defaults seems fine. Frustrated. What am I missing?

start with the HP scanner's interface, not with Acrobat. for the best technical assistance contact HP's help desk.

I was hopeful that starting with HP scanner's interface would solve it, but it still scans onto legal -- must be missing someting obvious that tells the software to scan to letter sized paper but am not finding options. Will try HP next. Thank you.
