Nature of word to pdf conversion errors

I'm running Acrobat Pro 8.1.2, freshly reinstalled with the upgrades, on an XP SP3 system. I am trying to make PDF's from Word 2002 docs, but the conversion fails every time, on different files, with the message "ERROR" and nothing else. Further, it leaves the Distiller propeller turning in the system tray until the machine is rebooted.

Simple files, such as one page letters, convert with no trouble. The files I'm having trouble with are long (50 plus pages) in 19th century academic French with numerous superscripts, etc., all from pre-Open Type Adobe Caslon.

Any idea what's going wrong? Is there any kind of "flight-check" software that would enable me to examine the doc file for possible problems before attempting to make the PDF?

While I'm whining, the pull down menu for font sources in the settings form is unbelievably stupid. It is a fixed size and maybe twenty characters wide. Like a lot of people, I use Extensis' Suitcase, and by default the vault is kept in C:/Documents and Settings/[username]...Well, we're already off the form. The result is one can't specify font sources.

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 8.1.2, Windows

Problem solved. It had to do with the settings for the Adobe PDF printer in the control panel; specifically, unchecking the "use system fonts only." Duh!

Apologies for taking people's time.
