imagine a dictionary: most certainly you wouldn't want reader to search every word when you perform a find. how can I define searchable and non-searchable text?

Hi, Out of the box, renderable (visible) text and hidden text (inclusive of the OCR 'layer' if present) will be looked over by Find or Search. For PDFs, "Find" and "Search" are very different things. "Find" will look at everything. "Search" has more functionality. You'd rely on the functionality of Search to utilize queries that were tailored to provide focus. Search needs the PDF to have an embedded search index or to have an associated cataloged search index. Of course, the details of cataloged search index and advanced search queries are described in Acrobat Help.
