Pdf comments

I received a pdf as an attachment to an email. I have Acrobat Pro 8. I wanted to make comments by way of sticky notes to the pdf but "sticky notes" shows as a shaded option and I can't seem to find a way to enable.
Help please?

Have you saved the email attached PDF to your local machine?

yes. then opened it in Acrobat 8 Pro . The COMMENT title along the top has Sticky notes shaded grey. Under Review and Comment...tools...only stamps is enabled.
How difficult can this be or maybe how dense I am?
