PDF printer crashes/stalls on Acrobat 9 & Windows 7 64 Bit

I have an install of CS 4 Design Premium and Frame Maker 9 installed on a Windows 7 64 Bit computer. When we try to print to PDF either from Frame Maker or form MS Office products it's crashes or stalls and never asks you where to save the PDF and therefore doesn’t create one.

Doesn't this sound familiar to anyone out there?

It may be that you need to run these in 32-bit compatibility mode.

okay, well I figured out a work around, it doesn't solve the issue but it does allow our tech writer to do his work. Here's what I found:

The problem seems to happen while windows should be showing you the Save As Window. You select print and the document shows up in Print Queue, status as Spooling, nothing seems to be happening then the program crashes. After the crash the Save As window appears but if you hit okay nothing happens. So the issue seems to be with windows showing the Save As windows at the correct time, I think both the printer and the program are waiting for an answer to the Save As window but windows has yet to show it.

So here's what I did.

In the 'printer' preferences I changed the Adobe PDF Output Folder setting from Prompt for Adobe PDF filename to a selected folder.

Now, when you print using the PDF printer, all the PDF's go to the desktop, without prompting you for the filename and location.

And magically the problem went away....
