PDFing a web site, or "How do I create super-long pages?"

When our web site moved from one design to another, I had to archive all the old Newsletter pages in a format that would retain the old design.

So I dumped each Newsletter into a PDF file that our users can download from our web site.

The problem is that this Newsletter is intended for viewing on the screen only... not as a printout. But Acrobat chopped the thing into 8.5x11 pages.

The result looks terrible. Images are bumped onto the next page or chopped in the middle, content is oddly aligned or not associated with the images (because the image has been pushed to the next page), etc.

Is there any way I can edit these files with Acrobat to remove ALL the page breaks? If this could be a single ultra-tall document, it would read MUCH better. (Like the original web pages.)

Since this Newsletter was never intended for printing - only for on-screen viewing - we don't lose anything by losing the page breaks.

Is there any way to do this? (Or is there some other solution I haven't thought of?)

Thank you for your time and help,
- CJ

Hi CJ,

There are options for setting custom page sizes when you use File-> Create PDF from Web Page as the conversion method. In the first dialog when you choose that menu item there is a Settings button, then in the next dialog there is a Page Layout tab where you can set the page size to custom and choose the height for your page.Hope this helps,

Thank you Dimitri! That will definitely be useful in the future... but it leaves me with two questions:

1. How can I modify my existing Acrobat files? (The old web site is gone now, and the only place that data exists is in the pile of odd-looking Acrobat files I have now.)

2. How do I determine how long a web page is, so I can set the Page Size to the proper number? I look at the web page in my browser, but I don't know how long that page is, so I don't know what settings to put in to the Page Size box...

Thanks again for the idea, though! I wish I had thought of it before I PDF'd all those pages!! :-)

Hi CJ,

I'm not sure you have much in the way of options for getting rid of the page breaks in the PDFs you have already converted. How about using something like WayBack Machine to ge tthe old files?

I don't know how to tell the length of the page, sorry. You could guesstimate by how many 8.5X11 pages you have now with the page breaks taken into consideration.

Hope this helps,

Dimitri
