PDFMaker - Word> hyperlinks on images disappear

I have a document that contains hyperlinks attached to both text and images. When I Create a PDF from the Acrobat tab in Word, the text hyperlinks in the resulting pdf are fine. But images with hyperlinks lose their hyperlinks.

I have PDFMaker settings checked for Add Links to Adobe PDF.

When I ctrl+click the links in the word doc, they work.

I made a small document with two pages to verify this. An image on page 1 has a link to a heading on page 2. A word on page 1 has a link to that same heading. The word hyperlink is present in the exported pdf. The image hyperlink is not (image is present, just not "hot".)

Is it true that Acrobat PDFMaker cannot convert hyperlinks on images from Word to links in the exported PDF?

Hi jeanned,
I made a 2 page Word file based on your description. Selecting the inserted graphic I put down a hyperlink and made the output PDF.
However, for my trial run, the link in the PDF did work.
Perhaps the variable is the selection(s) associated with bookmarks in Word that in the PDFMaker conversion settings?

Hi daka630,

Thanks for taking the time to try this.

I found an older export of my production doc, and at one time, the hyperlinks did work (they have not been changed).

I was fooling around with PDF saver's image settings for a while b/c I had some bullet images in the doc (transparent gif's) that looked awful in the exported pdf. I didn't change anything related to hyperlinks, though. At some point during these trial exports, the hyperlinks stopped working.

So my suspicion is that this problem is caused by some corrupted pdf maker settings. I've tried the following with no success:
1. Returning the settings to Standard and deleting all my test settings files, then exporting.
2. Disabling the addin in Word, exiting Word, re-starting Word, re-enabling the add-in, then exporting.

Any other ideas? Anyone else ever had this problem?

Hi Jeanne D

I've just had this problem this morning.
I have been using MS Word 2003 and Acrobat Pro 6 without errors before but now I get exactly the same issue as you describe - text links are fine but clicked images in acrobat trigger an error/info message that is most unhelpful.
As you say, there is no issue with the hyperlinking to bookmarks when these images are clicked in Word.
I've opened my PDf file in acrobat reader 9 and tried to click the image links but I get a long-winded info message on a "Launch File" dialog.

I've also played a bit with my PDF settings recently as well as the PDF macro in Word and suspect that something in these has been altered.

Please let me know how you get on and I will alert you to any fixes I find (oh, aren't I optimistic?!).

Ciao

PS. Forgot to say that my images do appear to be "hot" but as mentioned, acrobat refuses to honour the links.

Hi Gavin (and anyone following this issue),

My experience was a bit different than yours: when I generated the pdf the images did not show active hyperlinks (i.e. they were not "hot").

I finally *did* resolve this by choosing the "Quick and simple PDF" option (in the "Save Adobe PDF File As" dialog) when I used the "Create PDF" option in Word. The hyperlinks on the images were active in the exported pdf.

I think this might be a good starting point for you to diagnose your problem, or even a solution if you don't need to use any special settings.

Since choosing "fully Functional PDF" continues to dsable the links, I still suspect corrupted Preferences settings are to blame. "Restore defaults" in the Preferences dialog, Settings tab, did not remove them. I guess I will need to uninstall, clear out all the settings files on my system and then reinstall.

But no time for that now - I got the pdf's I needed, and have to get on to the next thing. If I have time (and inclination) over holiday break I will see if I can repair my installation and let you all know if it works.

I did not explain earlier that the images I am setting as hyperlinks appear in a cell in a table and I have used the default layout (in line with text) for them.
If I reformat the picture and alter the layout to "Square" and then convert to PDF all of a sudden the hyperlink works.
I have no idea why?

Here's the deal, I have been working on a xcel book and I need to print into a pdf file some image or text with hyperlinks to another cell that has an adress to my server page.

Page 1, C4

=HYPERLINK('page 2!'J4,"pdf")

Page 2, J4

http://www.blahblahblah.com.mx/blahblah.pdf

Or

Page 1, C4

=Hyperlink(http://www.blahblahblah.com.mx/blahblah.pdf,"pdf")

Or I simply paste an image and right click it to type in the hyperlink adress there.

Everything works just fine, except when I'm trying to print the file into a pdf file. I loose all the hyperlinks.

I really hope you can help me.
