problem with changes to characters when I create a PDF

I have used dotted left hand and top of paragraph borders in a word document (docx). When I turn it into a PDF file the left hand dots become dashes and the dots across the top of the paragraph are distorted. this is a serious problem for me as I'm working with a series of files that will end up being a 600 page document.

Any ideas for why this is happening?

Are you embedding all your fonts when you create the PDF? What setting are you using to create the PDF?
You can check to see if the fonts are currently being embedded in your PDF under the File > Properties > Font tab dialog.

Yes all the fonts are embedded. I'm using Calbri in my titles so i assume that the dots are created using that font.

when you ask what setting am i using to create the PDF - what do you mean? Do you mean on the "default settings" drop down? If so, I've tried a variety of settings from standard to high quality print. No change.

I had a Mac user friend convert the file to a PDF and he didn't have a problem - the dots were dots.

any other suggestions?

What version of Word are you using? If you select Adobe PDF as the default printer and then do a print preview in Word do you see the same problem?

I'm using office 2007.

Yes I see the same problem when I use print preview.

I have to send the files to the print shop very soon so I hope I get this resolved (well, I guess I can always have someone use a Mac to make the PDF files...).
