Problem with PDFMaker in Acrobat 9.2

In PDFMaker, Preferences, we select all headings to be converted to bookmarks.

PDFMaker does not convert headings if they also contain a char style. We use a char style called Chapter Name and assign it to Heading 1 so the Chapter number and ending paragraph mark does not appear in the header. StyleRef is used to reference Chapter Name in the header.

With other headings, we used a char style called Header Part 1 to reference it in the Header.

{STYLEREF “Chapter Name” \* MERGEFORMAT }
{STYLEREF “Header Part 1” \* MERGEFORMAT }

PDFMaker totally ignores these headings and does not create a bookmark. We have never had a problem with previous versions of Acrobat. Headings are always converted to bookmarks regardless if they have a char style assigned.

I’m now working around the problem by using Word 2007 Save As\Publish to PDF or XPS to create PDF files and selecting create bookmarks from headings. I then use acrobat to set the initial view to include bookmarks with page.

Have you checked the PDF Conversion settings?

There is an option on the bookmarks tab to select what features of Word you want to use to create bookmarks.

In the Bookmarks tab, the following options are checked:
Convert Word Headings to Bookmarks
Convert Word Styles to Bookmarks

There is a check in each Bookmark box for each Heading.
The char styles, Chapter Name and Header Part 1, do not show in the list.

In the Styleref field, be sure that the case of the Word style is correct, i.e., if you are referencing "Heading 1", do not use "{STYLEREF “heading 1” \* MERGEFORMAT }.

The problem I am have with PDFMaker in Acrobat 9.2 is that it does not convert to bookmarks any headings (Heading 1, Heading 2 ...) if that heading also has a char style assigned to the text within the heading. Therefore, any heading with a char style does not show up in bookmarks. Bookmarks are an important feature of our documentation as they are a quick link to topics. I have been using char styles on headings and converting using PDFMaker successfully with all of the prior Acrobat releases. I am convinced that Acrobat 9.2 has a bug which does not allow me to use PDFMaker to convert my headings to bookmarks. I have to use Word Save As PDF in order to do this.
