Problem with Split PDF Feature

I am having the same problem with Adobe Pro 9 version as well.

If I split the document and select Add Label and number before (of after) original name, the split works ok but as soon as I select Use book marknames for file names, I end up with the error message That the document is either read-only or currently in use by another user.

Has anybody been able to split using bookmarks and saving the document with using the bookmark names?

I am having the same issue. Has there been any resolution to this error?

I am having a related problem. I have not been able to find a way to preserve existing bookmarks when splitting a document - the bookmarks never survive in the split documents. I've tried selecting various ways of splitting the document, I've tried creating a hierarchy of bookmarks and asking it to split according to only the top-tier bookmarks, I've tried extracting pages - all the bookmarks always disappear after splitting. And printing to Adobe PDF doesn't preserve bookmarks either. I have Adobe 9 Pro.

solution: use the delete pages command (do it for each bookmark; i.e., delete all pages before and after the range of pages applicable to the bookmark that is to be preserve)

re preserving bookmarks when splitting document: thx for your post. that does work, except that the resulting document has all the bookmarks, including inoperable ones for pages no longer there.

You can delete the in inoperable bookmarks by highlight them and pressin the 'delete' key.

So there is no other way to split a PDF (into multiple document) and bookmark a filename?

There are many ways, some use 3rd party programs and some can be done by JavaScript.

Sounds the content splitter I previously purchased and used with Adobe 7. I don't know how to get it to work with adobe 9

I can't find the upgrade and I dont understand how to do wht "rbogie" explained above. Is there an eseminar on this feature? I never really was able to use the content split very well prior either. In my job I am asked to merge information into mergefields in word than I turn it into a huge (usually over a thousand pages) PDF which I need to spilt off in one and two page PDFs. Than I also have to make sure it is named a number that is in the PDF. please point me in a tutorial or eseminar direction. thank you

I experienced this problem with Acrobat X, when splitting a large file by top-level bookmarks. No problems were experienced until I selected the output option "Use bookmark names for the file names." Like the original poster in this thread, I got the error message saying that "the document is either read-only or currently in use by another user."

The fix turned out to be a "no duh" situation (aren't they all!).

If any of your bookmark names contain any prohibited characters, the file splitting operation will fail because it cannot assign prohibited characters to the new names for the split files. You will get the error message every time. Just re-name the bookmarks to omit the prohibited characters, and the operation will work just fine.
