Problems with large Word document freezing during PDF Creation

I am using Acrobat Standard 7 (upgraded from version 5) with Word 2003 and consistently have a problem trying to convert a 120 page Word document to PDF. The Word program turns to a read only version of the document near the end of the process and stops creation every time.

Any thoughts on how I can successfully convert this large document (it contains graphics, bookmarks, links and text)?

I've only found support about borders and shading on Adobe tech KB.

Many thanks for any help.

Are you using the PDFMaker macro in Word? If so, do you have the same problem if you Print to the Adobe PDF Printer?
Is it just one document that you have the problem with? Have you tried copying the entire document into a new document then printing?

Firstly, I don't know whether I'm using the PDF maker macro?! How do I know if I am or not? What does it do? If you mean do I use the Adobe PDF drop down list or the buttons in the Word taskbar to create the PDf file, then yes I do. I've tried both to no avail. I've tried printing to the Adobe printer and it works fine, but does not retain the bookmarks, links etc that I have in the Word doc.

Secondly, yes I have tried copying parts and the entire doc and printing - still probs.

thanks for your input.

What happens every time is that the Word doc turns into a read-only word doc and saves it as PdM?? during the PDF creation process then stops. Any thoughts?

The PDFmaker macro is the toolbar titled Adobe PDF in Word. If printing to the Adobe PDF printer works then try changing some of the settings of the PDFmaker macro in Word:
- Smallest File size
- Deselect security options
- Deselect bookmark options
- Deselect Word options

Was this Word document originally created in an earlier version? If so, make some changes, then resave with a new name.

If PDFMaker is freezing up when the Word doc turns into read only, try the following:

- Save the Word file as RTF then try converting it and/or

- Turn off Accessibility and Reflow in the Adobe PDF Change Conversion Settings menu in Word.
