Scanning 2 sides of a single sided document

Help! I'm not sure if my problem is with the scanner drivers, Windows Vista or a setting I'm missing on Acrobat. I just upgraded to Acrobat X hoping to solve this issue with no luck thus far.

The problem: When I scan documents from my scanner in the feed tray, it automatically scans the page again as it would for a double sided scan, even when it's a single sided original. This happens even if I manually select "single sided copy". Before I upgraded to Adobe X the scans would not complete at all and Adobe would cancel the scan. With X, it will now complete the scans if the originals are on 8 1/2 x 11 paper and include the blank pages which I then have to delete.

If my scanned original is legal sized the scan will not complete at all and I have to scan using my scanner interface software and save to a .pdf file. Until about 6 months ago (while running Acrobat 8) I could scan directly from Adobe with no issues at all regardless of paper size. But I can't figure out how to get the scanner, Adobe and Vista to play nicely together anymore! I have the most recent Windows updates, including service pak 2 for Vista, the most up to date scanner drivers and I can't figure out where the breakdown is happening. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Are you using the Custom Scan command in Acrobat X or a preset. If you are using the Custom Scan command is the dropdown for Sides set to Front Sides?

Also do you experience this if you use the scanner's native interface mode? Choose File > Create > PDF From Scanner > Custom Scan. Then click the Options button and choose Show Scanner's Native Interface from the User Interface menu.

Thanks for the help, Lori. I am using the Custom Scan command and it was set to front sides only.

I was not using the scanner's native interface mode and I followed your suggestions. I tried two scans using both letter and legal size paper. With the letter sized scan it still did a two sided scan and gave me two scanned images, one of them a blank page. While scanning, a message popped up which said "scanning two sides of a single sided document". I deleted the second page and was able to complete the scan. If I scan using the scanner's native interface to begin with it does not attempt to scan both sides of the page.

Then I did a second scan going thru the same steps you suggested but with an 8 1/2 x 14 piece of paper. The scanner attempted to pull it back through and do a double sided scan but Adobe gave a message that said "Unable to duplex because original document is too long" and then a window that said "Scan cancelled" popped up. So I was not able to scan legal size directly thru Adobe. I can scan legal size if I start the scan with the scanner's native interface.

Any other thoughts...?

Have you tried turning off the duplex scanning in your native scanning application?

Simplex/one-sided scanning is the deafault for all the output options in the native scanning application (.tif, .jpeg, .pdf, to email, file) I'd have to change it to duplex to get it to duplex scan. When I scan directly out of the native user interface it never tries to duplex like it does when I initiate the scan thru Acrobat.

I've even checked the settings on the scanner's buttons to see if one of them got accidentally knocked and changed to some strange 2-sided option but couldn't find anything. I would think if that were the case, it would scan 2 sides regardless of which option I used to initiate the scan. But I'm at a loss as to where the scanner is getting the message to scan two sides of the page.

Just curious, if you create another Windows user ID, do you experience the same issue? I'm wondering if it's something leftover in your registry.

I am also experiencing this. Should I just give up and use my HP Software to scan?

Thank you!

I have the same problem with the HP Office Jet Pro 8600 Plus. I have Acrobat X Pro on my computer. I found that there are two work-a-rounds for this specific printer using Acrobat X Pro: 1st, just scan the document directly from the scanner using the scanner control screen. The downside to this solution is you lose the ability to control what happens to the scanned document. In my case the document is scanned to My Documents folder. The printer assigns the name Scan001. It is necessary to rename the document and place it where you want.
The second work-a-round is to use custom scan in Acrobat. Make sure front side scanning is selected and the scanner will only scan the front or single side. I can't figure out why the scanner will not perform the same action when one of the other scanning selection is used where front side scanning is selected. Hopes this helps.

I am using Acrobat X Pro and I have the same problem with an Epson GT-S50, both with TWAIN and WIA drivers. (This scanner is able to scan double-sided in one pass.)

I have tried all of the suggestions in this thread, but it does not seem to matter which combination of settings or drivers I use, the scanner always scans documents as double-sided despite the fact that single-sided is specified.

I have no problem using Windows's scanning application, Epson's scanning application, or other third-party applications like OmniPage Pro to scan single-sided properly.

Furthermore, it appears as if this is a long-standing issue.

Do Adobe employees monitor these forums? Is there any way to formally file a bug report?

Thanks
