Searchable PDF catalog dilemma

I'm creating a navigable PDF catalog for distribution via CD.
I have many sections that I planned to handle as separate PDFs.
I have many links, and they all open as I wish, replacing the existing document.

My problem is related to my PDX index. When I click on my search results, the result opens in a new window instead of replacing my current window (if the results are from a different PDF section).

Questions:
1) Can I get the search result links to open in my existing open window?
2) Alternatively, should I create a single PDF catalog?
My catalog is over 1000 pages, image heavy and will probably be about 350 Mb when combined.

My goal is to create the best user experience.

Thanks for any input!

Larry, there is no limit to the size of a catalog. I have several now with over 10,000 files and over 40,000 pages. They work great. I have several that have a main index that will search all sections or when you go into a sub-section, the catalog changes to just that sub-section catalog.
The seach results panel is a separate free standing panel. If you set it right it will open to the left and you still have full screen.
