Standard file sizes

I know this will probably lead to a long discussion rather than a straight and forward answer but.....

Is there a formula for calculating the size (MB) of what a PDF document should be? 1 page with multiple graphics for print should equal - ??? What about if it is going to be emailed or posted to a website?

More specifically, I am creating an 8 page, image intensive, brochure for a client in Illustrator and Photoshop I was able to get the source files down to a manageable size but when I export to PDF they are still rather large. The client insists on having it be smaller than 2MB. Is this reasonable? I look forward to everyones comments and thank you in advance for helping out a newbie.

Hi TortillaSoup,

Formula- No.

Smallest size file you can get- Use the Optimizer in Acrobat.

Is 2MB reasonable? Too vague to answer, although I have seen many rich media PDFs and brochures that were much larger.

Hope this helps,

Dimitri

Arturo,

No, there are so many different compression, image resolution, color spaces, etc that can be used that will affect the file size it is not possible. Then there are attachments that could be added along with comments, JavaScirpt, and font embedding.
