Table of Contents / Bookmarks

Hi,

I'm trying to create a PDF document similar to the one in the following link:

http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12151_01/doc.150/e12153.pdf.

When you open this document, you will see at the left a table of contents. The table of contents are links to specific areas of the actual document.

I am using Acrobat Professional 8. Is it possible to create a PDF document with the functionality as the one in the link above?

If so, how do I go about doing that?

Thank you.

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 8.0, Windows

Hi focus310,

I get a Not Found error trying to use that link so I could not look at the file. But it is fairly easy to create bookmarks that simulate a TOC in Acrobat 8 Pro. There are pretty good instructions in the Help file ( Help >Complete Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro Help, or F1). Here is an excerpt on creating bookmakrs from the Help file-"Create a bookmark
Open the page where you want the bookmark to link to, and adjust the view settings.
Use the Select tool to create the bookmark:
To bookmark a single image, click in the image, or drag a rectangle around the image.

To bookmark a portion of an image, Ctrl-drag (Windows) or drag (Mac OS) a rectangle around the portion.

To bookmark selected text, drag to select it. The selected text becomes the label of the new bookmark. You can edit the label.

Click the Bookmarks button, and select the bookmark under which you want to place the new bookmark. If you don’t select a bookmark, the new bookmark is automatically added at the end of the list.
Choose New Bookmark from the Options menu, or click the New Bookmark icon at the top of the Bookmarks panel.
Type or edit the name of the new bookmark, and press Enter (Windows) or Return (Mac OS). "

See the Help file for more details on what you can do with bookmarks.

Hope this helps,

Dimitri

Hi,

Thank you for the reply. I will give it a try.

I'm sorry about the link. The document apparently is available to only those who have an account with that website.

While most TOC's that I make I do when I am creating the document, you can data scrape the file and create a TOC automatically using applications like Omni Page or ABBYY Fine reader...

G'day focus310
The PDF you refer to was authored with FrameMaker 7.
The title, heading, and table title/caption paragraph tags were used by FrameMaker to generate the table of contents and the list of tables. Additionally, in the PDF Setup dialog, appropriate paragraph tags were selected to develop the desired bookmarks in the output PDF.

So, a direct answer to your question would be "Purchase and use FrameMaker" .
With that said, you could also create a similar output PDF with other authoring applications such as InDesign or MS Word.

The file e12153.pdf (SQL Developer Installation Guide) is available via a link from the web page above.
